Dear brothers and sisters in Christ
The Olive Street Church of Christ in Mexico, MO (population 12,000), is looking for financial help to build a new place of worship. Our current building is one of the oldest buildings in town. There is only one bathroom, and it is in the basement down a long flight of steps. Our auditorium can only be reached by climbing four steps. Which makes our entire building inaccessible to people who can't climb steps. At a seminar in our building recently, a visitor from the community decided not to stay because she didn't have bathroom access.
We recently purchased two lots on the West side of town with highway frontage. However, that purchase has depleted our building fund. We have about $22.000 in savings. We have about 20 members. Our annual income through Sunday morning contributions and outside support is about $32,000 per year. We pay almost all of the salary of our full-time preacher. A. Dean Gittings. Jr. Since our current building is paid for, we don't have a mortgage payment. However, other expenses (utilities, Bible class material, contribution to evangelistic efforts, etc.) arc about $9, 000 per year, which means we are "going in the hole" about $3,000 each year.
Based on our current income, we cannot begin making payments to build and continue to pay our preacher. We believe that preaching the Word is more important than a building. Therefore, we will not remove our preacher to pay for a new church building. The best alternative is to seek additional outside support.
